Since arriving in Australia in 2007, 20-year-old singer/songwriter Joe Moore has been making his presence felt in his adopted town of Sydney and, in only a short time has attracted a loyal fan base.
A familiar fixture to many in Sydney’s CBD, Joe Moore was discovered whilst busking in the city’s Pitt Street Mall. His powerful voice and mesmerising music would stop hurried shoppers and workers in their tracks and leave them under the impression that they had stumbled across well known performer giving an impromptu concert.
Testament to his incredible skill, many expressed their love of his music and astonishment at his ability on Facebook and uploaded clips to YouTube of Joe performing as stunned passers-by ask ‘Does anyone know who this kid is? He’s amazing.’
Joe has gone on to perform at numerous Sydney venues (including Lizotte’s in Dee Why, The Old Manly Boatshed, The Observer Hotel in The Rocks, O’Malley’s in Kings Cross, The Sir Joseph Banks Hotel in Botany). Further afield, Joe has played at a variety of RSL clubs across NSW and, in 2011, spent six months touring North Queensland, including a 3-month residency in Cairns. Joe has also supported the likes of Christine Anu, Leo Sayer, Diesel and James Reyne.
For a career spanning only five years, these achievements are a far cry from his first performance in his birth country.
Joe was born in Guildford, Surrey and grew up in Horsham, West Sussex. His father was also a singer and, wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, Moore started singing as soon as he knew what it was and, at age 14, gave his first live performance at a local pub’s Open Mic Night.
Today, Joe and his guitar can still be found wowing visitors to Sydney’s CBD shopping hub with his unique blend of acoustic originals and classic covers. Stunned spectators continue to eagerly record clips on their cameras and phones and to send messages of support and admiration via Facebook.
However, perhaps to the disappointment of Sydney’s shoppers, Joe Moore’s rising profile is continuing to take him further afield and the talented singer has already been named as the support act for Tania Doko and Casey Donovan on their respective 2012 Summer tours.
Whilst Pitt Street may be all the more dull without his captivating performances, 2012 is shaping up to be his biggest year yet and the opportunity to take his music to a new audience is one Joe Moore is grasping with both hands.
