Marcus Corowa: South Juniors, Kingsford NSW (Supporting Christine Anu)
2012 Deadly Award recipient Marcus Corowa will be supporting Christine Anu on her acclaimed REWIND Show.
Sydney-based singer/songwriter Marcus Corowa, may be a relative newcomer to the professional music scene, but he is already turning heads amongst music fans with his catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics and silky smooth singing voice.
Drawing on his Aboriginal and South Sea Islander roots, Marcus combines elements of blues, jazz and funk to create a soulful, soothing sound that is distinctly his own.
Growing up in Bowen, a small coastal town in Queensland, Marcus’ earliest childhood memories are of eating mangoes and playing guitar. He moved from Bowen to Brisbane with his family in his teens, and after finishing high school, got a job sorting mail at Australia Post. However, it wasn’t long before Marcus decided to swap stamps for amps, and in late 2009 he decided to pursue a career in music.
In less than two years Marcus soared to great heights, becoming a finalist in the 2010 Q Song Awards, Queenslandʼs premier songwriting competition, and the APRA Professional Development Awards in 2011.
Despite having always lived in Queensland, in 2011 Marcus made the bold and spontaneous move to Sydney. Since relocating, he has notched up appearances at Sydney’s South Sea Islander Recognition Day, the Sydney Festival and alongside Jessica Mauboy and Dan Sultan at the 2012 Yabun Festival. Marcus also played at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Bundaberg’s South Sea Islander Conference and most recently completed a string of performances for the 2012 NAIDOC Week.
A gifted composer, as well as writing his own songs, Marcus penned the entire score for musical The New Black, which was showcased as part of the 2012 Arts Centre Melbourne Carnegie 18 program.
