We are thrilled to announce that our opening artist for Bond University’s 2015 concert program is Christine Anu!
Christine Anu is one of Australia’s most successful and iconic Indigenous artists. This year marks the 20th anniversary of her hit album, Stylin’ Up which featured all-time favourite, My Island Home, and propelled Christine into the annals of Australian music history.
Christine Anu’s performance will feature the best of her illustrious 20-year career, along with songs from Rewind, her acclaimed tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Renowned for fusing the sounds of her Torres Strait Islander heritage with rich funk, pop and rock rhythms, Christine combines lush and cinematic arrangements with a truly great voice that embraces jazz and sultry soul.
Her successful career over two decades boasts platinum albums, sell-out musicals, Hollywood blockbusters, and high-profile collaborations with showbiz and musical luminaries such as Baz Luhrmann, Paul Kelly, Olivia Newton-John and David Atkins. She is a multiple ARIA and Deadly Award recipient, has received numerous awards for stage shows including The Sapphires, and is widely respected as a charity Patron and Ambassador.
Tyus Arndt and the Churchie soul band are supporting Christine Anu. Tyus also hails from Thursday Island, and we’re delighted to have him join the Bond University student community this year on an Indigenous scholarship. Tyus was previously at Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) in Brisbane on a Yalari scholarship. He has performed in the USA with the Gondwana Choir, was featured in the popular Qantas ‘I still call Australia home’ ad from 2009, and has performed at the Opera House.
Lastly, the Poetry Gallery exhibition is a special cultural addition to this day. It’s a visual display of poems by local writers. Anyone can enter, so if you write or compose lyrics, we’d love to present your work!
